Hybrex VIU VoIP Card
With the successive rollout of broadband internet access to business and residential customers now underway Voice over IP (VoIP) is emerging as a viable and economic alternative to standard Telco services for voice communications now and for the future. Business, from SOHO to corporate, with broadband access can leverage this investment in IP with considerable savings in inter-office and inter-business communications through the use of VoIP.

The Hybrex VIU VoIP card was developed for the Hybrex GDS, G2 and G1E systems to provide an integrated solution for access to the communications economy possible with VoIP. Each Hybrex VIU card installed provides system integration of a 3 channel SIP Protocol VoIP facility that is seen by the parent system as 3 trunks. These trunks can be selected directly, or automatically using LCR, or even externally via DISA. In short these VoIP channels have the full parent system functionality, as programmed, available to them. Calls via the VIU channels can be made to/from any standard telephone number worldwide via an Internet Telephony Service Provider (ITSP) at very low tarrifs, or direct to other VoIP equipped endpoints - like a branch office for example - for only the cost of the data.

SPU-90 SIP Proxy Server :

The SPU-90 functions as a fully self contained SIP Proxy Server and Registrar. Its use is for forming a network facility for up to 89 endpoints. An endpoint can be any SIP phone, softphone, or other VIU card. The real advantage is this form of network - beside being under the complete control of the owner of the parent system - is that endpoints can be dynamic since every time the endpoint registers with the SPU-90 its address at that time is noted. This means endpoints can be say a softphone on a laptop PC carried by a travelling sales rep for example who then registers each time he connects to broadband Internet and starts his softphone. The calls then made are pure VoIP with no tariff apart from data cost and can be made to any other registered member on the SPU-90 or into the system hosting the SPU-90. Fixed endpoints can of course be part of the network as well - their address just doesn't change, or rarely changes in the case of an ISP account with a dynamic address. Also worth a mention is that endpoints can happily exist connected to a LAN that has access to the Internet via a normal modem-router or router gateway (ie behind a NAT firewall). Another feature offered by the SPU-90 is Direct In Dial into any Hybrex GDS system whether it is the host of the SPU-90 or carrying a VIU that is registered to the SPU-90. This essentially means “Desk to Desk Dialing” under these circumstances. Like the standard VIU the SPU-90 is seen as three trunks by the host system so all of the functions available for incoming calls to that system are available eg. Auto Attendant, DISA, the ability if authorised to seize a trunk on the host system and dial out from there, etc. etc. The SPU-90 as a Proxy Server actually carries the voice traffic of any connections between members where those members are located in disparate networks. Due to hardware limitations the proxy capacity of the SPU-90 is seven (7) channels - ie 7 pairs of members talking to each other. Where members are located in the same network and the voice connection can be made direct the SPU-90 instructs accordingly and does not proxy that particular traffic - in this case the SPU-90 capacity is 20 connections of this type, degraded of course by the number of current proxied connections. The SPU-90 is available for the G1E, G2, and GDS platforms on the relevant hardware (see above).
The only real caveat is: as a Proxy Server, to work over the Internet, the SPU-90 must be allocated a real Internet address (Public IP) in order that its members can contact it at all times. This is accomplished by either routing a Public IP from a subnet to it, or dedicating a “static IP” Internet account to it and using the cards PPPoE login function to obtain the acccount address.

In summary then the SPU-90 provides:
  • Self contained SIP Proxy Server and Registrar.
  • Integrated into any Hybrex G1E, G2, or GDS system.
  • Up to 89 registered members in the network (the 90th member is the host system itself)
  • Any or all members can have dynamic address status, and/or exist behind NAT firewalls.
  • Appears as 3 trunks to host system - so full facilities of the host system available to proxied members.
  • Direct In Dial - “desk to desk dialing” available from any member into a host or member(VIU) Hybrex GDS system.
  • SPU-90 proxy capacity :
    • 7 channels for disparate network endpoints.
    • 20 channels for same network endpoints (see notes above).
  • SPU-90 must be assigned a “Real” Internet address (Public IP).

ISU3 IP Extension Card :
In Development and due for release shortly is the ISU3 IP Extension Card. This VIU variant will provide for the registration of commonly 8, but up to 24 in certain configurations, SIP endpoints that perform in the same manner as any other system extension. Being IP extensions they can be remotely located - any where a broadband Internet connection is available. Having true “extension” status means they will have all the system resources available to them including system Voicemail etc. SIP phones and softphones can be used as endpoints, with the caveat that they are capable of inband DTMF to enable transfer functionality, but otherwise will perform the same as any other “analogue” extension. The real power however will become apparent when the new Hybrex SIP Phone is released which will carry full DSS appearance.
There is also a bevy of other IP equipment currently under development - watch this space.
